Dalhousie University's Master of Science in Periodontics program focuses on comprehensive patient evaluation, precise diagnosis and treatment planning, and the application of scientifically supported treatment methods.
The program provides you with a variety of clinical experiences, emphasizing thorough patient evaluation and accuracy in diagnosis and treatment planning. You will be trained to manage patients in need of treatment for a variety of periodontal diseases and mucogingival defects, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), dental implant therapy, and conscious sedation. The completion of a research thesis is also a requirement for this degree.
Graduates of this program are eligible to write the National Dental Specialty Exam and fellowship exams for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Periodontics and the American Board of Periodontology Diplomate Exams.
Careers
As a graduate of this accredited program, you will be eligible to take the licensure exams required to practice in the clinical dental specialty of Periodontics. You will also be eligible to sit fellowship exams for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Periodontology Diplomate.
You may also choose to pursue an academic path, including opportunities in teaching and research. Once you successfully complete the national certification exam (NDSE), you’ll be eligible to apply for licensure in Canada, the United States, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia.

This is a full-time, course-based master’s program with a required research thesis.

Thesis: As part of your graduate studies, you will have the opportunity to engage in your own research with a supervisor and supervisory committee overseeing your progress.

You'll need to meet the Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum requirements as well as any program-specific admission requirements before you can apply.

Program-specific requirements
This program requires you to meet the following criteria:
Completion of an accredited four-year DDS (or equivalent) with a minimum A- average in the last two years.
Graduates of non-accredited dentistry (DDS/DMD/BDS) programs must have successfully completed the NDEB alternate pathway to certification or an Advanced Standing/Qualifying Program at an accredited dental institution.
Applicants whose first language is not English must meet program-specific English language proficiency requirements.
