Costs and funding
Since exchange programs involve paying tuition to Dalhousie at the rate you currently pay for a full-time course load in your faculty, you wouldn't experience a difference in cost in terms of tuition.
For study abroad opportunities, you pay your tuition to the host university—usually in the host nation’s currency.
Costs for travel and living overseas vary depending on where you’re studying, but there are scholarships and bursaries available that can offset some of those costs. Bursaries are awarded based on demonstrated financial need, while scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement. All applications will automatically be considered for a bursary and scholarship.
In some cases, the financial awards you can receive will make a term or year abroad more affordable than staying in Canada!
Applying for your international experience
Study abroad guide
There are steps you need to take, and guidelines you need to follow, before and after you apply for an exchange or study abroad program.
Check out our guide to help you plan your international adventure.
Application process
You need to apply for an exchange or study abroad program a year before you go (e.g., if you want to go away in your third year, you apply in your second year) and you must have completed 15 credit hours at Dalhousie or King’s before applying. You apply for your top three destinations.
Applications for university-wide programs open at the beginning of November and close in mid-January (usually November 1 – January 15). Departmental programs may have different application dates and deadlines.
Applications are reviewed and ranked based on your current CGPA and the quality of your written answers. These include a Summary of Interest (max. 400 words) and a series of short answer questions about each of your exchange selections.
If your application is successful and you’re offered an exchange, you need to pay a non-refundable $100 fee to accept it. You then apply to, and need to be accepted by, the host university.
