How to apply

Your guide to the application process

Applying for graduate Studies at Dalhousie is a detailed process. We’ve outlined the steps below, don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you run into challenges along the way.

Check your application deadline

Your application deadline depends on your citizenship, the term you want to start and, in many cases, the specific program you are applying to. Non-Canadian applicants generally need to apply earlier than Canadian applicants to allow for the processing of study permits.

The table below provides the general application deadlines set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. But be sure to confirm the deadline for your program of choice by visiting the Programs page of our website.

General application deadlines

For September admission:
June 1 (Canadian applicants), April 1 (non-Canadian applicants)

For January admission:
October 31 (Canadian applicants), August 31 (non-Canadian applicants)

For May admission:
Feb. 28 (Canadian applicants), Dec. 31 (non-Canadian applicants)

Complete the application form and pay the fee

You can complete the online application or, when recommended by your department, complete the PDF version of the application [PDF - 164kb] and submit it by email to registrar@dal.ca

The application fee is $115 and must be received before your application is processed. The methods of payment are included on the online and PDF applications.

Other steps to consider

In addition to submitting your application form you will need to provide supporting documents and may need to secure a faculty member to work with as a supervisor for your research. Review the list below to determine what else may be required and to learn what to do after submitting your application.
