Engineering touches everyone's life, and the opportunities are close to limitless. At Atlantic Canada's #1 engineering school, you'll build a broad foundation first, then specialize in the discipline that fits your interests and goals.
You'll spend your first two years in our Core Engineering Program, building strong fundamentals in math, science, engineering science and design, in Halifax or on our Truro campus, where class sizes average 20 to 30. Along the way you'll explore our disciplines before choosing one.
You can add paid co-op work terms, earn a Diploma of Engineering after two years, and get hands-on with our student design teams, who've launched satellites and raced solar- and electric-powered vehicles on the global stage.
Careers
An engineering degree from Dal makes you highly employable almost anywhere, locally, nationally, or internationally. Where you land depends on the discipline you choose, from energy and infrastructure to manufacturing, technology, health, and the environment.
Most graduates begin in design, analysis or project roles and grow into research and development, project management or leadership. With 90+ co-op partners, students often receive full-time offers before they graduate, and co-op work terms count toward the experience needed to become a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
After your BEng you'll register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with a provincial engineering association on the path to P.Eng. and receive your Iron Ring.
What you will learn
You'll start with the Core Engineering Program: two years of math, science, engineering science and design that build a broad foundation and let you explore each discipline. You'll apply for your discipline in first year, take related courses in second year, then immerse yourself fully from third year on.

Design, co-op, and hands-on learning
Hands-on learning starts in first year with Design 1, you'll build real solutions from day one, and continues through a senior Capstone project with an industry client. Choose the five-year co-op stream to add paid work terms with one of 90+ partner organizations, and get involved through student design teams and the Emera ideaHUB, an early-stage deep tech incubator.
Customize your degree
This program is built to be customized.
Choose from seven disciplines, start in Halifax or Truro, add co-op, and graduate with a Diploma of Engineering after two years if you wish. You can also combine your studies with a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts, or graduate with Distinction or Sexton Distinction.

Our optional five-year co-op stream gives you the opportunity to get professional experience and connections and earn an average amount of up to CAD 15,000 per semester during your co-op term.

Minimum admission requirements
To be considered for admission to this program, you must meet minimum academic criteria:
- Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
- Achievement of the minimum average for your program of choice.
- Completion of Grade 12 English (or equivalent course).
Admission to many Dalhousie programs is competitive. This means that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
