Grades

Grades are used to determine your status in your degree program, to allocate awards and other honours and will be considered by graduate schools, prospective employers and others.

Grade scale and definitions

A

Excellent. Work shows:

  • Considerable evidence of original thinking
  • Demonstrated outstanding capacity to analyze and synthesize
  • Outstanding grasp of subject matter
  • Evidence of extensive knowledge base

A+

GPA: 4.30

Numeric: 90 – 100

A

GPA: 4.00

Numeric: 85 – 89

A-

GPA: 3.70

Numeric: 80 – 84


B

Good. Work shows:

  • Evidence of grasp of subject matter

  • Some evidence of critical capacity and analytical ability

  • Reasonable understanding of relevant issues 

  • Evidence of familiarity with the literature

B-

GPA: 2.70

Numeric: 70 – 72

B

GPA: 4.30

Numeric: 73 – 76

B+

GPA: 3.30

Numeric: 77 – 79


C

Satisfactory. Work shows:

  • Evidence of some understanding of the subject matter

  • Ability to develop solutions to simple problems

  • Student is benefitting from their university experience. 

C

GPA: 2.00

Numeric: 60 – 64

C-

GPA: 1.70

Numeric: 55 – 59

C+

GPA: 2.30

Numeric: 65 – 69


D

Marginal pass. Work shows:

  • Evidence of minimally acceptable familiarity with subject matter

  • Critical and analytical skills (except in programs where a minimum grade of ‘C’ is required)

GPA: 1.00

Numeric: 50 – 54

Grades of D+ and D- are not awarded.


FM

Marginal failure. Available only for:

  • Engineering
  • Health
  • Commerce

GPA: 0.00

 


F

Inadequate. Work shows:

  • Insufficient evidence of understanding of the subject matter

  • Weakness in critical and analytical skills

  • Limited or irrelevant use of the literature 

GPA: 0.00

Numeric: 0 – 49


INC

Incomplete.

GPA: 0.00

 


W

GPA Neutral and no credit obtained. 

  • Indicates that student withdrew after deadline.


ILL

GPA neutral and no credit obtained. 

  • Granted for compassionate reasons and illness.


P

GPA neutral.

  • Pass


Pending

GPA neutral.

  • Grade not reported.


MT

GPA neutral. Part of multi-term course:

  • The grade assigned temporarily within a single academic year until all requirements of the multi-term course are complete. 

  • The final grade obtained in the multi-term course will replace the MT grade in each term.


TR

GPA neutral.

  • Transfer credit on admission.


CR

GPA neutral. GPA neutral option due to extenuating circumstances:

  • Credit obtained (requires a minimum passing grade in the course)


NCR

GPA neutral. GPA neutral option due to extenuating circumstances:

  • No credit obtained
