Dal Residence is committed to supporting the mission of a barrier-free Dalhousie and to ensuring residents have their accessibility requirements met.

Accessibility features

On our Halifax Campuses, we offer accessible rooms in Risley Hall and LeMarchant Place. Depending on your requirements, there may be spaces in other buildings that will offer the accommodations you need. 

Some of the features in our accessible rooms and spaces include:

  • larger rooms to ensure space for mobility devices or support animals

  • accessible private bathrooms with barrier-free shower, shower bench, and grab bars

  • roll under in-room sink

  • roll under desk 

  • adjustable height bed

  • emergency alarms including flashing light and sound

  • automatic door openers on rooms

  • automatic door openers on some hallways doors and in common spaces such as lounges and laundry 

  • elevator access

  • braille signage (by request)

  • quiet areas

  • kitchens and kitchenettes for special food requirements

Truro Campus

Our accessible residence options are limited on the Truro Campus, but there is a wheelchair accessible ramp at the entry into Trueman House, and some limited bathroom accessibility features on the first floor.

How to request an accommodation

To request an accessibility accommodation in residence:

  1. on page 4 of the residence application, you will have the option to indicate your  residence accommodation request. Providing information and/or documentation to support your application will strengthen the request.  

  2. complete the Request for Accommodation form (NetID login required) 

  3. upload medical documentation via the form upload in the residence application, if applicable.

Other accessibility assistance

Dalhousie’s Student Accessibility Centre offers a wide range of support for students with barriers related to any human rights protected characteristic. 

Their experienced team works collaboratively with students and staff to create an inclusive environment and a great university experience at Dalhousie.
