Know your parking options

Strategies that deal with parking availability can overlap with sustainability efforts.

Maximizing existing parking spaces through parking management solutions is a smart way to create more availability with the same spot numbers. For example:

  • Utilizing land more effectively through parkades and underground parking (where possible) as opposed to surface lots. Newer parkades have been designed with features such as green walls and/or planters, solar panel shading, dedicated accessible bicycle parking, recycled content in building material, LED lighting, rainwater collection, electric car charge stations, and ride share and car share spaces.
  • Management strategies such as % of oversell and pay and display parking.
  • Reserved parking spaces offered to those who RideShare. 
  • Initiatives such as the Idle Free Program and Fleet Wiser.

Idle Free Program

Keep our campus healthy and green by cutting the gas! If drivers of light-duty vehicles avoided idling by just three minutes a day over one year, Canadians would collectively save 630 million litres of fuel and 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Keep your eye out for the idle-free signage that has been posted around campus. Some of the Dalhousie fleet vehicles have also been equipped with GPS idling notification software.

Host a Lunch and Learn

To help support the introduction of the idle-free guidelines, the Office of Sustainability has partnered with several organizations on campus. The Office of Sustainability also offers a lunch and learn session and educational material to help employees learn how to improve their driving behaviours to save money and reduce emissions.
