There are many ways to get involved as a student or an employee

Whether it’s by joining a group or society, carpooling with a co-worker, getting bike safety training from the Dal Bike Centre, or shopping for your veggies at the campus farmer’s market, you’ll always find a way to make a difference.

Free Store

As a hub for redistributing free gently used goods such as household items, kitchenware, school supplies, and more, Dal’s Free Store is reducing waste, saving individuals money, and contributing to a circular economy. Since launching in 2024, we’ve mobilized over $75,000 of used goods!

Anyone can donate by dropping items off outside the College of Sustainability in the Mona Campbell Building during weekdays from 7AM-10PM. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can express interest here (login required).

Annual Sustainability & Transportation Survey

Each year the Office of Sustainability promotes the Annual Sustainability and Transportation Survey to the campus population. The purpose of the survey is to identify the success of sustainability programs, gather ideas for the future, and understand the campus community's general state of knowledge, values, and interest.

The Office works with students to employ a number of survey recruitment techniques to gather a broad sample from Dalhousie students, staff, and faculty.

Student Internships

Each year, the Office of Sustainability works with students and faculty across campus to use the campus as a living lab and explore sustainability challenges through employment opportunities.  

Since 2008, we have hired close to 70 student employees. Students have taken on various roles to help us make progress on a wide range of sustainability plans and initiatives related to our work on:

  • campus  

  • energy, water and climate

  • natural environment 

  • food

  • transportation 

  • waste

Green Labs

Dalhousie is a member of the U15 group of Canada’s most research-intensive universities. Dalhousie has over 1350 laboratory spaces across four campuses. Lab spaces typically are four to five times more energy intensive than classroom space.

Sustainable Events Certifications

When we plan sustainable events, we put our values into action

The Sustainable Event Certification is about recognizing our campus community for planning events that reduce our impact on the environment. The program focuses on waste, water and energy reduction as well as inclusivity and accessibility. 

What kind of events can apply for the certification?

Any meetings, conferences, or other group engagements held on any Dalhousie campus can apply for the certification. Small or large, it doesn't matter!
