Cleaning
You are responsible for cleaning your own room and providing your own cleaning supplies. You must also clean any messes you’ve made in public spaces.
Custodial Services is only responsible for the general cleaning of public areas, such as lounges, bathrooms, and garbage rooms.
Waste management
Residences include garbage service, but residents are responsible for ensuring all personal garbage, recycling, and organics are taken to the designated area and sorted appropriately.
Maintenance and repairs
We take maintenance issues in our residences seriously. If you see something in your room or a common area that needs our attention, please complete a Maintenance Request Form (MRF).
Pest control
You need to report any sighting of insects or rodents to your front desk immediately. If the issue is not reported, you can be held financially responsible for fumigation. You must comply with the recommendations of the pest control professionals on any necessary measures you need to take to fix the situation.
You should also submit a Maintenance request form (MRF) so that our team can ensure measures are in place to prevent future issues.
Front desk
Halifax
All residence students have access to a front desk for inquiries, maintenance support, parcel pick-up, basic necessities, help with keys, and equipment sign out. Gerard Hall, Howe Hall, Risley Hall, LeMarchant Place, and Shirreff Hall have front desks that are staffed 24 hours a day.
- Glengary Apartments uses the Risley Hall front desk
- Grad House uses the Gerard Hall front desk
Truro
Truro students may come to the residence office anytime during office hours.

Storage
Summer storage for returning residence students
Summer storage is available during the summer for students returning to residence the following year.
Because of limited space, there is a box limit per resident, and space is first come, first served, so contact your front desk (for Halifax campuses) or the Residence Life Don (for Truro campus) early. See the Summer Storage Agreement (NetID login required) for details.
Dalhousie accepts no responsibility for the theft, loss or damage of any items placed in storage. Talk to the front desk for more information on storage options and locations.
Bicycles
You can bring a bicycle to residence—all of the residence buildings have bike racks nearby, and some have storage available inside the building. As bike thefts sometimes occur, always lock your bike.
If you keep your bike in your room, you are not allowed to put bike hooks in the walls or ceilings, and you will be billed for any damage to the room or furniture resulting from storing your bicycle. You are also not allowed to chain your bike to stair railings, pipes or other fixtures in common areas. If you store a bicycle in an unauthorized area, it will be removed.
Parking
Overnight parking availability is very rare on or near the Halifax campus, so if possible it's best to leave your car behind when coming to residence.
Consider bringing your bike—many residences have bike storage facilities—or make the most of your Halifax Transit UPass, which gives you unlimited access to our city's transit system.
Parking details
- General Parking permits are NOT valid for overnight parking on campus. This will result in issuance of tickets, booting, or possibly towing.
- Overnight parking at Risley Hall already has a large wait list and it's very unlikely spots will become available. We will only know how much of the wait list is addressed after current permit holders have the chance to renew (Sept 1). If you still wish to be added to the wait list, send an email with your name, Dalhousie ID number and telephone number to reserved.list@dal.ca. Be sure to specify that you want to be considered for the Risley Hall Parkade. Requests will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Do not bring your car with you if you have not arranged overnight parking outside of Dalhousie.
Other parking options
Third party companies have various overnight parking lots throughout the downtown area, though none are close to the Studley campus. Contact them directly for locations, availability, and pricing:
