Sustainable procurement and waste management

The products we consume daily in our homes and workplaces have a major impact on the environment. 

Considering the full product life cycle

We need to begin considering the entire life cycle of every product we use. Life cycle refers to the resources each product is made of, those used in its production, the energy used in transporting the product to its user, how the product is used, and finally, how it is disposed of after it is no longer useful.

Dalhousie has a Sustainability Policy that has specific sustainability procurement requirements.

Sustainable procurement

At Dal, we are mindful of the environmental impact of procuring supplies needed for daily activities throughout the university. We apply sustainability best practices to every purchasing decision and are working hard to constantly approve our approach.

Waste management

Dalhousie University aims to reduce and divert solid, liquid, and hazardous waste from landfills. In addition to the many programs and efforts outlined on this page, material from residences is donated to charity each year through an organized reuse program.

ENERGY STAR partnership

Dalhousie is an ENERGY STAR Participant. The ENERGY STAR symbol helps consumers identify major appliances and other energy-using equipment that save energy. 

ENERGY STAR identifies products as the top high efficiency performer in their category. As an ENERGY STAR Partner, Dalhousie will promote the ENERGY STAR program and products on campus.
