Installation ceremony

Dr. Kim Brooks was installed as Dalhousie University’s 13th president and vice-chancellor on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 during Fall Convocation ceremonies. Dr. Rustum Southwell was installed as Dalhousie’s ninth chancellor as part of the same ceremony.

Presidential installation

After taking her pledge, Dr. Brooks chose to hand the Convocation stage over to Dr. Sherry Pictou instead of making a traditional installation speech. Dr. Pictou is a faculty member from Management and Law, who spoke to graduates about the Indigenous concept of seven generations of impact.

Chancellor's installation

Dr. Southwell, Dalhousie’s ninth chancellor, followed his installation pledge with a moving speech and powerful statement:

“After a lifetime this long, we do so many things. However, for the very first time, I believe, I am the first of anything in my life of such consequence – the first Black chancellor of Dalhousie University.”
