MSc program

Application deadlines

January 31 (of the year of anticipated admission) - Deadline for completed applications.
Students planning to apply for Dalhousie University Scholarships (i.e., Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship or Killam Predoctoral Scholarship), or for external funding (i.e., CIHR, SSHRC or NSERC) should be mindful of funder and institutional scholarship deadlines and should submit their program application materials well before these deadlines to be reviewed for eligibility.

Application fee ($115)

This payment can be made online with a credit card or by way of the other methods listed in the body of the application itself. If you are not able to pay online, please contact the Office of the Registrar to make payment. Do not send your payment to the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology

Documents

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Two confidential reference letters: normally required to be from academics familiar with your work. Reference letters can be submitted through the electronic reference system in the online application. Further details are available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website Submitting your supporting documents
  • A curriculum vitae providing an overview of your qualifications and experience, including: academic history with all post-secondary institutions and degrees; professional, volunteer, general leadership experience and history; publications and presentations; awards and honors
  • A one-page ‘Personal statement’ document that includes: 1) Your professional interests and career objectives, and 2) Your research interests related to the MSc program in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research
  • Evidence of quantitative proficiency, demonstrated by strong performance in a recent math or statistics course, or other evidence of quantitative skills. Optional for 2024 applicants: A one-page ‘Quantitative training and experience’ document that includes description of courses in statistics or other quantitative courses and any practical experience with quantitative analyses. If applicable, list any relevant statistics course(s) that are shown on your university transcripts, when you took each course (year and term), and the general topics that were covered (appending the description of the course from the university academic calendar or the formal syllabus would also be sufficient). If applicable, provide a concise description of the types of statistical analyses that you have conducted in the past two years.
  • Proof of English language competency (if applicable): TOEFL iBT: 100; IELTS 7.5, EAP2 A.

PhD program

Application deadlines

September 1 (of the year prior to anticipated admission) – Deadline for completed applications for those who wish to apply for scholarships.
December 1 (of the year prior to anticipated admission) – Deadline for completed applications.

Identify a supervisor

Prospective applicants are advised to begin communicating with faculty members at the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology to identify a supervisor who is willing to support you educationally and, if you do not obtain outside support, financially.

  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Proof of English language competency if the first language is not English
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A one-page outline of the proposed doctoral research
  • A one-page statement of research experience to date, professional interests and career objectives
  • An example of written work (e.g. a published paper or research report)
  • A one-page statement outlining how you intend to fund your PhD study
  • A letter from the identified PhD supervisor describing what communication she or he has had with you and how he or she plans to mentor and support your doctoral research
