Student Advancement in Leadership

Certificate Program

The Student Advancement In Leadership program is a non-academic opportunity focused on engaging students to be active participants in their own leadership development.

By working with professionals, students participating in SAIL develop skills in areas such as career exploration, personal growth, communication and leadership development.

Students are required to identify and engage in volunteer opportunities, attend professional development seminars, participate in international and cultural events and learn the process of program development.

Concentration Modules

Students are encouraged to choose a SAIL concentration in one of the modules, in addition to completing Certificate requirements. SAIL participants who develop a concentration in Personal Development, Career Exploration, Communication Development or Leadership Development will be given an additional certificate.

Time Commitment

Within two academic years, SAIL participants are required to attend regular meetings, Leadership Training Seminars, complete 30 hours of volunteer hours and participate in at least one international or cultural event. Certificate candidates must complete each module and develop and present a Leadership Training Seminar in an approved subject area and demonstrate that they have learned the process of program development, delivery and assessment.

Rewards for participating

Through the planning and implementation of unique learning activities, student leaders will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of professional skills.  Included in this program students will be rewarded with:

  • A Student Leadership Certificate upon completion
  • Leadership training and professional development
  • Networking opportunities with professionals through conferences and sessions
  • Leadership Banquet in March
  • Off campus activities

Program requirements

Students have up to 2 years to complete these requirements!

MUST

  • Complete two sessions from each of the three modules (Career Exploration, Leadership Development, and Communication Development)
  • Complete one session from the Personality Development module
  • Complete the module 'Apply Your Knowledge'
  • Participate in a minimum of one international event
  • Volunteer a minimum of 30 hours

STRONGLY ENCOURAGED

  • Participate in the Leadership Banquet
  • Monthly Meetings and Social Events
  • East Coast Student Leaders Conference- Dalhousie University Halifax Campus

Certificate Banquet

A Certificate Banquet will be held each year in March and first year participants will be asked to assist in planning and hosting the event. Those who complete the program will receive their certificate.

The Certificate Banquet also celebrates those in the campus community who are recognized for their leadership roles and they will also receive certificates.

What are the advantages of being in the program?

This program is designed specifically for students wanting to be more intentional about building leadership skills, enhancing their personal and development skills, and exploring their career interests and competencies. This program will aim to work on students’ communication skills, career exploration, leadership and personal development.  There is opportunity to parallel this program with their current involvement on and off campus.

What is expected of me?

How many hours a week do I need to commit to the program?

Students are required to complete specific tasks to finish the program.  Each week sessions will be offered. The majority of the sessions are an hour in length and takes place in the evenings (5:00 pm-6:00 pm). This way any students who have evening courses can still participate in these sessions.  Sessions are offered Monday-Thursday.  Students are not required participate in every session.  As for volunteering, many opportunities allow students to do this on their own time. 

Is there a cost for the program?

There is NO cost for students to participate in this program.

How are the meetings/events communicated to the group?

The meetings, monthly sessions, and events (both on and off campus) will be communicated through a monthly e-mail sent by the program coordinator. The will also be listed on the Student Leadership Program website under "monthly meetings" and "announcements"

Volunteer Opportunities

Below is list of volunteer opportunities for students.  It is suggested students contact the organization or department they choose to work with as early in the semester as possible.  This will ensure that the student will have the proper documentation and/or training needed continue in the position.   Please be aware for opportunities that may involve children or animals, students may be required to provide a criminal record check or attend an animal handling session.
