The Office uses many strategies to reach our sustainability goals

The Office organizes its programs using four pillars of action: Policy & Planning, Monitoring, Behaviour, and Retrofit & New Construction Projects.

Sustainability related policies and plans

Monitoring

A number of sustainability indicators are monitored at different intervals from hourly to yearly. Indicators include metrics on:

  • Heating;
  • Cooling;
  • Electricity;
  • Water;
  • Commuting;
  • Food;
  • Waste;
  • Emissions;
  • Curriculum;
  • Student Engagement;
  • & Many More... 

Dalhousie participates in AASHE STARS and publically reports every three years on operational indicators. We collect data annually via our Annual Sustainability Survey.

Behaviour

Campaigns and events are run throughout the year by the Office of Sustainability and other groups on campus including the DSU Sustainability Office, the College of Sustainability, and others.

Retrofit & Construction Projects

The Office of Sustainability works with Facilities Management and other partners to implement projects. Examples include:

Plans for the future include major energy and water upgrades to buildings and systems, more native plantings, enhanced waste bin design, green building construction and commuting infrastructure.
