Funding & support

Finance your future

Looking for a way to fund your MSc or PhD and further your research? Explore all your options—whether you apply for a Dalhousie scholarship or an external research grant.

Internal funding

Scholarships and bursaries
As a graduate student in excellent standing, you're eligible to apply for a number of funding opportunities through the Faculty of Graduate Studies

Research assistant positions
You may also consider applying for a research assistant position. Individual faculty members who have funding from grants will occasionally offer these positions. Interested? Get in touch with the faculty member you're interested in working with.

External funding

Federal and provincial funding agencies for health research
Next, get in touch with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the researchNS Scotia Scholars Award. These are two of our most important sources of funding.

Other topic-specific funding
Once you've decided on a thesis topic, you'll want to begin looking into funding your research through an outside agency. Consider hospitals and foundations for particular diseases or conditions, and the governing bodies of the populations you're interested in studying.

Graduate thesis student conference travel grants

If you're a full-time student, you may be eligible for conference travel grants.
