Peter MacKinnon began his role as Dalhousie University's interim president on January 15, 2019. Previously, he served as president of the University of Saskatchewan from 1999-2012 and dean of law at the same institution for ten years prior.

Since 2012, he served for two years as the inaugural Prime Ministers of Canada Fellow at the Public Policy Forum in Ottawa and for another two years as interim president of Athabasca University. He chaired the Canadian Academy of Health Science's Expert Panel on team science and was commissioned by the Premier of Saskatchewan to review and report on sovereign wealth funds.

Mr. MacKinnon has written many scholarly articles, commentaries and reports and is the author or co-editor of five books, including two recent volumes on universities published by the University of Toronto Press: University Leadership and Public Policy (2014) and University Commons Divided: Exploring Debate and Dissent on Campus (2018).

He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Queen's Counsel, a recipient of a Canadian Bar Association Distinguished Service Award, and of honorary degrees from Queen's University, University of Victoria, Dalhousie University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Regina.

From 2003-2005, he was chair of Universities Canada - formerly the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. 

Peter MacKinnon grew up on Prince Edward Island and is a proud Dalhousie alumnus (BA'69, History and Political Science).
