Provost and VP academic

As provost and vice-president academic (acting), Dr. Marty Leonard is Dalhousie University’s senior academic leader.

Dr. Marty Leonard joined the Dalhousie community in 1993 as a Professor in the Biology department. Since that time, she has served as acting dean of Science (2008-2009) and is nearing the completion of her second and final term as dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (2014-2025).

Prior to joining Dalhousie, Dr. Leonard studied at the University of Guelph (BSc), Carleton University (MSc), University of Ottawa (PhD) and the University of Cambridge (Post-doc). Her current research focuses on avian conservation and behaviour, and her work has earned her the William Brewster Memorial Award for contributions to knowledge on birds of the western hemisphere. She has supervised over 50 undergraduate and 25 graduate students and post-docs and is a recipient of the Jamie Smith Memorial Award for Graduate Student Mentoring.

During Dr. Leonard’s tenure as dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, along with many colleagues, she has worked to improve graduate student and faculty supports and engagement, provide support for equity-deserving students, increase the number of PhDs, fundraise, increase supports for graduate student mental health and strengthen services provided by FGS.

The Provost Committee reviews issues of significant academic, financial, and operational importance and ensures academic priorities are integrated with administrative and financial requirements to achieve the university strategic priorities.
