Dalhousie advanced into the top 100 universities in the world for studying law in the latest edition of one of the most-watched global rankings of universities by subject area.

The 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject placed Dal in 81st place for Law — an indicator of its status as one of the best universities in the world for law degrees. This year, the ranking for the subject of Law includes 290 universities, up from 257 last year. Dal is now ranked 6th in Canada for its Law program.

The success marks a return to the top echelon for the Schulich School of Law, which also ranked in the top 100 in the 2018 and 2019 rankings — the first two years the THE Subject rankings included Law.

“We’re delighted to see our school recognized again in the Times Higher Education subject ranking for law schools,” says Schulich School of Law Dean Camille Cameron. “We are very proud of our strong reputation, but no one affiliated with our school takes this for granted — we are committed to earning it every day through teaching, research, innovation and public service.”

To determine the ranking, THE looks at strength in Teaching; Research volume, Income and reputation; Citations; International outlook; and Industry income.

The jump to 81st globally for Law is the result of increases in several of the performance indicators, but most notable were the improvements in both research and teaching reputation, which each saw increases of more than 30 points over last year’s results.
