Accessibility, deferrals, extensions & other accommodation
This is an overview of law school and university processes regarding requests for deferrals, extensions and other forms of accommodation. More information is available in the law school and university regulations, set out in the Dalhousie Calendar: Dentistry/Law/Medicine Academic Calendar in web form via the Registrar's Office and in the Professional Programs Calendar 2016/17. Information is also included in every law course syllabus.
You are welcome to contact the Associate Dean, Academic,or Director, Student Services and Engagement, for further information. We will also send this information to students via email closer to the exam period; however, we want to call the key points to your attention early in the term. We wish you a happy and healthy term, but if problems do arise, please contact us as soon as possible so that we may assist you. To reach the Associate Dean in the evening or on a weekend:
Professor Michael Deturbide Associate Dean, Academic michael.deturbide@dal.ca w: 902-494-1041 cell/text: 902-441-3907 |
Dana-Lyn Mackenzie Director, Student Services and Engagement Dana-Lyn.MacKenzie@dal.ca w: 902-494-1043 cell: 778-866-2342 |
How do I apply for a deferral, extension or other accommodation? |
Requests for accommodation due to barriers related to disability, or for religious obligations, or any characteristic under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act must be made to the Advising and Access Services Centre (AASC) well before the scheduled exam date or paper submission deadline. To make a request: You must fill out Form A1 on the AASC website. Please note the AASC deadlines set out on that site. Requests for deferral, extension or other accommodation due to sudden illness or injury, or due to a family emergency must be addressed to the Studies Committee. Please send such requests to Professor Deturbide or Dana-Lyn Mackenzie. If you fall ill or are in crisis such that you may need accommodation regarding exams, paper deadlines, etc, please contact Professor Deturbide or Dana-Lyn Mackenzie by phone or by e-mail, as soon as possible and in any event before the exam or deadline in question. Please see below for further information on forms of accommodation. We can provide you with information on how to request a deferral, extension or other accommodation. Also, if you have any questions about accommodation issues more generally, please contact one of us. Please note that accommodation from the Studies Committee has not been granted until you are advised of this by Professor Deturbide or Dana-Lyn Mackenzie. |
How do deferrals of exams or papers work? |
The regulations provide that: "Where it can be established that, for medical or personal reasons, a student's ability to pursue a class or to write an examination or complete an assignment for credit is significantly hampered, the Faculty may allow the student to write a special examination or complete a special assignment." Special examinations are held in July. Where a Special is granted in a paper course, a deadline is set by the Studies Committee and this deadline would be no later than the end of the Special examination period in July. |
How do extensions on major papers or assignments work? |
Where it can be established that for medical or personal reasons, a student's ability to work on a major paper or other assignment has been impeded, but not to the extent that a Special is required, the student may request an extension on the paper or assignment. Where an extension is granted, the length of the extension is based on an assessment of the amount of time reasonably lost due to the factors outlined by the student and supported by the documentation presented. If a student is requesting an extension because of time missed due to illness or personal circumstances, once the student is well enough to resume work, he or she should continue working on the paper or assignment pending a decision from Studies. |
What kind of documentation do I need to provide? |
Students must provide the Studies Committee with satisfactory documentation to support their requests. It is important that documentation be contemporaneous with the circumstances relied upon. In the case of a request based on a medical condition, the Committee will require a letter from a doctor. Students who become ill during the exam period, or during the course of an exam or assignment, must see a doctor as quickly as possible (i.e. that same day) so as to properly document their illness. |
What are the deadlines for applying for deferrals, extensions or other accommodation? |
The deadlines for requests to the university-wide AASC are set out on its webpage. Please note that some of these deadlines are quite early, so if you are considering applying to the AASC, please go to their website immediately and find out what time limits apply. For applications to the Studies Committee, students need to be aware that requests for Special exams or assignments based on personal or medical circumstances must be made promptly. Any request for a Special should be made as soon as possible, and in any event, no later than the date on which the exam is to be written or the paper or other assignment is to be submitted. Where a student becomes ill during an exam and, as a result of that illness, intends to request a Special, the student must contact Professor Deturbide or Dana-Lyn Mackenzie immediately, and in any event, no later than at the end of the exam. Where a student intends to request an extension, the request should be made as soon as possible, and in any event, no later than the date on which the assignment or paper is due. Please note that accommodation from the Studies Committee has not been granted until you are advised of this by Professor Deturbide or Dana-Lyn Mackenzie. |

JustBalance: Wellness resources at the Schulich School of Law
Law school can be a very difficult time for many students. You might be struggling or know someone who is. If so, JustBalance is for you.
Think of this as a gateway — inside, you will find lots of student stories, along with the information, support and resource links you need to begin your journey to wellness. Our goal is to provide a forum for exploring the systemic and personal issues facing today’s law students in a way that is both relevant and meaningful.
Whether you see all of yourself in these experiences or just glimpses of what you’re going through, know you’re not alone and that there are options for a healthier and more fulfilling law school experience. By joining the conversation here and keeping it going after you leave, you’ll be helping to create an even larger community of support, understanding and sensitivity. The more we acknowledge the influences that impact law student well-being, the sooner we’ll be able to influence systemic change, so that it’s not just ok to ask for and receive help at law school, but easy and comfortable to do so.
Keep balanced and stay well!
