Performance Opportunities

Public performance by students in the Fountain School of Performing Arts is a key element of our programs, strongly encouraged and supported by the faculty.

Rehearsal and performance schedules are carefully planned to avoid conflicts with the students' other commitments. Weekly studio lessons in voice, guitar, piano, organ, and orchestral and band instruments are complemented by participation in numerous ensembles that present regular concerts.

Music performances

Each week during the term, noon-hour recitals feature outstanding soloists and ensembles, while Concerto Night offers students an opportunity to perform a solo work with full orchestral accompaniment. Several community organizations sponsor concert series in which students may be invited to perform, and all third and fourth-year students whose area of concentration is performance present a solo recital. As well as student performances, the Fountain School sponsors an annual Faculty Chamber Recital Series and our annual opera brings together students, faculty and community artists for a fully staged operatic production.  See Our Season for this year's calendar of events.

Other opportunities

The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra provides opportunities for qualified students, and Symphony Nova Scotia, a full-time professional orchestra, frequently invites outstanding students to join them for their public performances when extra players are required. Students may, in the fourth year of their program, audition for the SNS Apprenticeship, a full credit course which allows the student to supplement their income and gain valuable professional experience.
