Cinema and Media Studies

Cinema and Media Studies teaches students to think critically about the moving image in its historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts, and to appreciate and watch this exciting visual medium with eyes wide open. The Fountain School offers several ways to study the moving image at the undergraduate level. All of them require you to take the following courses, plus a number of electives.

  • FILM 2301.03: Film History 1
  • FILM 2311.03: Film Analysis
  • FILM 3301.03: Film History 2

BA with Combined Honours in Cinema and Media Studies

You can combine a BA Honours degree in Cinema and Media Studies with another subject. If you would like to do your Honours credit in Cinema and Media Studies, you must apply by 15 September of your graduating year using by submitting the CMS Honours Thesis Form to the Associate Director of Cinema and Media Studies as well as the Dalhousie-wide Honours form to the Registrar’s office.

BA (120 credit hour) Major in Cinema and Media Studies

BA (120 credit hour) Double Major in Cinema and Media Studies
You can combine a BA Major degree in Cinema and Media Studies with another subject. For full details see the entry in the Academic Calendar.

Minor in Film Studies
This is an inter-university program offered in collaboration with NSCAD University and St Mary’s University. For full details see the entry in the Academic Calendar.

Note
Students may not take both the Minor in Film Studies and the Major/Double Major/Combined Honours in Cinema and Media Studies.
