Constance MacIntosh Joins Expert Panel for Hydraulic Fracturing Review

Posted by School of Law on May 1, 2014 in News

The Schulich School of Law would like to congratulate Associate Professor Constance MacIntosh on being appointed as the legal expert to the advisory panel on Hydraulic Fracturing in Nova Scotia. The province has commissioned an independent review of hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as “fracking”. With the help of the panel and public consultation, the review will assess social, economic, environmental and health impacts of hydraulic fracturing and will put forth their recommendations to the province.

"Our panel will be rigorously independent and evidence-led, and I look forward to engaging with Nova Scotians again on setting the highest possible standards and ambitions for our province's sustainable energy future," states David Wheeler, Chair of the Hydraulic Fracturing Independent Review and Cape Breton University’s President.

Constance MacIntosh is the director of the Health Law Institute here at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University.  She was asked to take on this role following feedback from stakeholders. Her background in health law and policy, with an emphasis on regulatory regimes, water quality and Aboriginal law made her the ideal candidate for this role.

“I was honoured to be asked to join the panel,” commented Professor MacIntosh, who added, “the responsibilities are enormous.”

The panel is looking to add a small group of legal experts with specific knowledge of oil and gas and environmental regulations to advise MacIntosh as required. Currently, a Primer on the Process of Hydraulic Fracturing is available to the public. To find out more about this review, please visit www.cbu.ca/hfstudy.
