Major‑General Blaise Cathcart Re‑appointed as Judge Advocate General

It is with great pleasure we’d like to congratulate Dal Law alumnus Major-General Blaise Cathcart on his re-appointment as Judge Advocate General. 

“It is a distinct and humbling privilege to be re-appointed as the Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Armed Forces for a second term. I am honoured to lead the exceptional personnel within the Office of the Judge Advocate General and to continue to advance the rule of law,” states Major-General Cathcart.

Originally from Exeter, Ontario, he has served for the past 24 years in many roles both home and abroad including: Deputy Legal Advisor and General Counsel Military in the Office of the Legal Advisor to the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), as the Deputy Judge Advocate General/Military Justice and Administrative Law, and as Deputy Judge Advocate General/Operations. He also served as Senior Legal Advisor to the Commander Canadian Task Force Bosnia-Herzegovina (SFOR). 

“Our Government is committed to ensuring the Canadian military justice system continues to be one in which Canadians have trust and confidence,” states the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. “Major-General Cathcart has shown a depth of experience in military law and military justice while serving as Judge Advocate General for the past four years, and his re-appointment underscores the quality and integrity of the Office of the Judge Advocate General.”

Major-General Cathcart completed his Bachelor of Law through the Dalhousie Law School and was then called to the bar in Nova Scotia in 1989. He was first appointed JAG in April 2010 and was promoted to the rank of Major-General in October 2012.
