Dr. Marsha Campbell-Yeo, Assistant Professor, Dalhousie University, School of Nursing
The research team has mothers hold their diaper-clad babies skin-to-skin on the mother’s bare chest.
“We found that mothers actually reduce the pain that babies feel up to 30 per cent, and not only the pain that they feel initially during the procedure, but how they recover after — so how quickly their heart rates recover, how stable they are, even how much oxygen is in their blood. This is really important with respect to babies who are quite ill in the intensive care (unit).”
