Communicating

E-mail

Messages from the university are sent only to your Dalhousie address, not to commercial accounts (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo). You can set up your Dalhousie account to forward messages to a commercial account. You can also check your Dalhousie e-mail over the Web, using My.Dal.

File Transfer

Don't use e-mail to send a large file (over 20 MB), especially when submitting an assignment to an instructor. The university's OneDrive service (Microsoft Sharepoint) has proven to be unreliable, so you are advised to share files via the Brightspace site for your course or by using a free commercial service such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

Bulletin Boards

Bulletin boards throughout the building are organized by subject: scholarships, lectures, exhibitions, items for sale, etc. The bulletin boards on the landing are reserved for academic notices. Items posted in the wrong place or on the walls will be removed.

Mail

Incoming mail addressed to Architecture students is placed in the student mailboxes inside the Resource Centre. If you need to send inter-campus mail (addressed to other Dalhousie departments or to other Halifax universities), it can be left in the outgoing mailbox in the Architecture office. All other outgoing mail should use the Canada Post mailbox outside the school.

Phone

The phone in the Architecture student lounge (902-494-6115) accepts all incoming calls, but outgoing calls must be local. To make a long distance call, you can use the pay phone across from the auditorium. The emergency phones at the studio level (across from the elevator) and the ground floor (outside HA18) connect straight to Dalhousie Security.

Fax

The fax machine in the Architecture office is not available to students, unless it is being used for a co-op work term job search with the approval of Joanne Firth. If the Architecture office receives a fax addressed to a student, it will be placed in the student mailbox. A fee will be charged if a lengthy fax is received.

Messages for Faculty and Staff

Most faculty members don't have formal office hours but are often available in their offices. Mailboxes for faculty and staff are located in the faculty office area. Their office phone numbers and e-mail addresses are listed on the pages for Architecture Faculty and Staff in Architecture and Planning.
