Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

PLEASE NOTE:  

ALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE DECLARED ESS (ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIETY) AS ONE OF THEIR OFFICIAL MAJORS.

RETROACTIVE APPLICATIONS (FOR TRAVEL THAT HAS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE) CAN UNFORTUNATELY NOT BE CONSIDERED.

ESS Scholarships

Vince Ginley Scholarship

The Vince Ginley fund provides one or more annual scholarships (based on academic achievement in the previous year) for third- and fourth-year students enrolled in the ESS Major/Honours program.

NOTE: No application required. The recipient is selected based on cumulative grade point average (GPA) by the ESS Awards Committee and funds are awarded in the Spring for the subsequent academic year. 

ESS Bursaries

Ambury and Victoria Stuart International Internship Bursary

This bursary is intended to support international internships for second- or third-year students [enrolled in the ESS (Environment, Sustainability and Society) undergraduate program] who are planning a semester abroad that will involve an internship or experiential learning opportunity.

Recipients of bursary support are required to submit regular reports during their time abroad and a final reflection, following their return, describing the benefits derived from their experience.

Deborah Buszard Internship Bursary

This bursary is intended to support a third- or fourth-year student [enrolled in the ESS (Environment, Sustainability and Society) undergraduate program] who wishes to participate in an internship or experiential learning opportunity.

Preference will be given to applications that show clear evidence of financial need.

ESS Awards

Environment, Sustainability and Society Student Travel Award

Travel awards are available to students who are majoring in ESS and are in need of financial support to participate in an internship, conference or other educational opportunity. Students must demonstrate that they have sought additional funding through other available sources.

Application process

Students are asked to submit a letter of application to sustprog@dal.ca (maximum two pages)  addressed to the College Awards Committee, Attention: Steven Mannell, Director. All applications are submitted to the awards committee which meets twice yearly to select the successful applicants.

Application periods are from September 15 to October 31 and from January 15 to March 15. Funds will be awarded in November and April (respectively) for the following academic year.

Please include the following in your letter:

  • The award or bursary to which you are applying.
  • A description of the activity (course, internship, study abroad, etc.) that you plan on attending. Please note that funds will not be awarded for retroactive travel expenses.
  • Evidence of acceptance into program or the date when you expect to receive confirmation of your acceptance.
  • The educational benefit you will derive from this experience.
  • A budget outlining your expected expenses.
  • Additional sources of funding sought and details of any funds awarded.
