This past summer, four Schulich School of Law students had the opportunity to expand their horizons through the prestigious Queen’s University International Law Program.

Second-year students Selena Cui, Jessica Duffney, Beth Gouda, and Charles Lesperance spent May and June studying in both Canada and Germany as part of the intensive eight-week program. They join more than 1,100 law students who have participated in the program since it began in 2001.

The Queen’s program offers three areas of focus: International Business Law, International Environmental Law, and Public International Law. Students learn from professors at Queen’s and McGill, alongside guest lecturers who are recognized leaders in international law. Past instructors have included practitioners from top law firms, Global Affairs Canada, the Department of Justice, the United Nations, and other international organizations.

The experience began with three weeks of study at Queen’s University in Kingston, followed by four weeks at Bard College in Berlin. Alongside academic coursework, students took part in guest lectures, networking events, day trips, and visits to law firms, courts, and international organizations to receive a comprehensive and practical introduction to global legal practice.

Each student received a certificate of completion – Cui’s in International Business Law, and Duffney, Gouda and Lesperance in Public International Law, with Gouda earning a certificate ‘with merit’ as one of the top three students in her stream.

The students reflect on the most impactful moments from their experience:

“This program provided firsthand exposure to major international law institutions and the chance to engage with key figures in the field. One of the most memorable moments was walking through the International Criminal Court (ICC), seeing their courtroom, and gaining insight into their work. We also had the privilege of meeting a sitting judge of the ICC and a senior prosecutor.”
Jessica Duffney – Louisdale, NS

"Some of my most impactful experiences were learning the fundamentals of international refugee law, visiting the former site of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and hearing guest lectures on pressing topics such as ecocide and Canada-US trade relations."
Beth Gouda – Toronto, ON

“The thing that surprised me the most about the International Law Program was how close-knit everyone became in such a relatively short period of time. In less than two months, I developed very close connections with my classmates and feel grateful for the friendships and memories we made.”
Charles Lesperance – Brantford, ON
