Rethink Sustainability Teams

Start or join a sustainability team

Team Up!

Sign up to be a sustainability team! Your team may range in varying sizes and could include:

  • a residence floor,
  • a department,
  • a group of staff and faculty,
  • a student society,
  • and even a lab group.

Some Sustainability Teams may meet and organize activities during non-work/class hours. Others may negotiate a combination of non-work hours and up to five hours a month during work time with Department heads or as a class assignment. Read about the current rethink teams.

How it works:

Each team will decide on when they would like to meet and what activities they would like to pursue. The Office of Sustainability will provide a two-hour training once a team joins. The Sustainability Team Manual [PDF - 677 kB] provides a number of activity ideas and resources to get you started. You can also order rethink posters and stickers (order form coming soon) to remind your team members to live more sustainably. Teams will participate in various self-selected sustainable activities. These educational and participatory activities are centered around waste, transportation, energy, water, food and biodiversity issues. Various awards and recognition for outstanding efforts throughout the year will be given at the annual sustainability celebration in April.

Your team has a chance at winning the coveted rethink trophy, designed by Shyronn Smardon, a Masters student in the Dalhousie School of Architecture. This unique piece is made entirely of materials salvaged from around campus (pictured left). It is presented yearly to the winning rethink team. The Killam Library rethink team took the trophy home in April 2011.

Who will take the trophy home in April 2012?

We are currently designing an online challenge program to be launched in Fall 2011 on our website. When this is launched, departments will be able to use this tool to compete with other departments to become more sustainable. The form can also be used by individual Dalhousie community members to challenge themselves to make their behavior more sustainable.
