Explore the many sustainable transportation options available to those travelling to, from, and between Dal campuses.

Multi-Modal Transportation

Dalhousie supports balanced, multi-modal transportation options using Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies, offering incentives and programs to reduce single occupant vehicle trips. These efforts aim to:

  • increase accessibility
  • manage parking availability
  • reduce transportation costs all around
  • reduce the Dal community’s collective carbon footprint

As part of these efforts, the Office of Sustainability has a Transportation Demand Management plan, releases an annual University Commuiter Survey, conducts studies, and supports the development of new and existing programs.

SmartTrip: Exercise Your Options with Dalhousie University

SmartTrip

Dalhousie University has partnered with HRM’s SmartTrip program to inspire students, faculty, and staff to engage in alternative sustainable transportation decisions, which supports Dal’s overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental and physical well-being are both important values, and we encourage them by supporting active transportation for students and staff.

Public transit

Public transit is good for your wallet and the environment. The Halifax Transit system is extensive and includes ferries between Dartmouth and the Peninsula.

There are plenty of current and upcoming options for travelling within the HRM and between Dal campuses using shuttle services or trains.

Ride sharing

Ridesharing, or carpooling, is a way to share your driving with friends and co-workers and cut down on your commuting costs. Share the cost of fuel and give the environment a break.

Parking

Strategies that deal with parking availability overlap with sustainability efforts. At Dal, we work hard to ensure this overlap is used effectively in order to increase parking availability and decrease the university community’s carbon footprint.

  • Guaranteed Ride Home: If you are a regular commuter without your own car, learn how this program helps you get home for an emergency or unexpected late shift.
