Using sustainable transportation reduces our energy consumption

Sustainable Transportation Plan

The Office of Sustainability releases an annual University commuter survey [PDF - 7.34 MB], Transportation Demand Management (TDM) reports, and supports the development of new and existing programs. The Dalhousie University Transportation Demand Management Plan [PDF - 3 MB] and Technical Report [PDF - 1.6 MB] has been prepared by IBI and Urban Trans. The Transportation and Security Committee will review the plan and make recommendations to senior administration for 2012.

Benefits of walking, cycling and transit

Transportation accounts for roughly 25 per cent of Canada’s total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable transportation methods, such as walking, cycling, and transit, have multiple benefits:

  • Reduces our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reduces air pollution (and associated risks such as asthma)
  • Offers the health benefits of physical activity
  • Sustainable transportation methods also can be more cost-effective
