Moving health research upstream

Posted by Kathryn Morse on March 3, 2016 in News

The Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre (AHPRC) recently announced a new name:  the organization, established at Dalhousie in 1993, will now be known as the Healthy Populations Institute (HPI).

This name change represents a re-positioning of the centre's research efforts to understanding and promoting the conditions necessary for healthy populations. The Healthy Populations Institute will build on its history with a greater focus on reducing health inequities, recognizing the need to highlight more explicitly ‘upstream research’ which addresses the fundamental causes of unhealthy lives and communities. HPI will be placing a special emphasis on informing policies and practices that can reduce the economic challenges facing the healthcare system.  Research and supporting activities will be organized around four clusters:  Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing; Youth and Healthy Aging; Health of Marginalized Populations and Implementation Science.  HPI encourages and supports the work of interdisciplinary research teams and draws together collaborators from many sectors to design and carry out large, multifaceted projects.

The Healthy Populations Institute looks forward to working collaboratively with its extensive network of partners to have a positive impact on health in the region and in Canada.
