Faculty and students at the School of Health Sciences will have expanded opportnities for MRI-based research as a result of a collaboration announced September 22 between GE Healthcare Canada and BIOTIC, a research centre of the IWK and the Nova Scotia Health Authority's QEII Health Sciences Centre.  GE Healthcare Canada is a division of General Electric and BIOTIC's research and development program is led by Dalhousie Health Sciences professor, Dr. Steven Beyea.  The collaboration will use a high-precision 3T MRI donated to the QEII to explore better ways  to diagnose and treat diseases of the brain, liver and prostate.

Leveraged through a $2.9M research award from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, the goal, over the next five years, is to design, develop, test and commercialize diagnostic software used in medical imaging.  At the announcement in Halifax last month, Dr. Beyea said the group expected to make dramatic improvements to patient care in Nova Scotia and potentially around the world through the collaboration.  The collaboration includes a teaching and learning partnership with the QEII, which will give Dalhousie students access to research opportunities with GE Healthcare Canada, a global giant in medical research.
