Dr. Ingrid Waldron (School of Nursing) is currently collaborating with students in the College of Sustainability at Dalhousie on Time to Clear the Air: Art on Environmental Racism by Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian Youth. This project, which is being funded by the Cobequid Community Health Board Community Development Fund, is based on Dr. Waldron's Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities, and Community Health Project (ENRICH).
The objectives of Time to Clear the Air are:
- to engage Mi'kmaw and African Nova Scotian youth across the province in creating art that communicates experiences of environmental racism in their communities;
- to create forums for diverse artistic expression as a means to encourage dialogue on environmental justice issues;
- to raise awareness of environmental justice issues among Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian youth; and
- to engage youth in using art to mobilize other youth in their community around environmental justice issues. Art submitted by youth will be showcased via an online platform (Instagram or Facebook) and at an art exhibit in the community at the conclusion of the project. Youth will also have the opportunity to win cash prizes for their artwork.
