Faculty Certificate in Teaching and Learning

The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) is offering a non-credit program, free to Dalhousie faculty members including limited term contract faculty, part-time academics, as well as staff members who teach or have an interest in university teaching.

Completion of all four Program Components is necessary to obtain the Certificate. The Faculty Certificate may be completed within one year, or participants may wish to take up to three years to complete the requirements.

All components of the Program draw on the research literature for evidence-based excellence in teaching and learning practice. For each component part, the participants' work will be assessed by the Instructor or the Program Coordinator on a pass/fail basis according to pre-determined standards for learning outcomes.

Although participants may wish to take up to three years to complete the four required components, extensions beyond three years will require prior approval by the Certificate Coordinator or the Director of the CLT. The non-credit Course Design Course is equivalent to a graduate level, semester-long course. The various Studio Courses and the Teaching Dossier Workshop will require approximately 8-10 contact-hours each. Each of the three Peer Observations will require approximately two contact-hours in addition to the time for observations.  The Certificate program requires a significant investment of time and energy by participants.

Admission Criteria

Dalhousie faculty members including limited term contract faculty, part-time academics, and post-doctoral fellows, as well as staff members who teach or have an interest in university teaching, may participate in the Certificate. Faculty and staff interested in participating in only specific components are welcome, but will not receive the Certificate credential. Registration in the Course Design Course and Studio Courses is limited, and priority will be given to those who are currently registered for the Certificate Program.
