We are sad to be acknowledging the news of Elder Daniel Paul's passing at the age of 84. A Dalhousie honorary degree recipient (2013), Elder Paul was a Mi'kmaq editor, activist and author best known for his renowned and landmark 1993 book, We Were Not the Savages (a Dal Reads selection in 2017). He was a member of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia. Read more on Elder Paul.
Recently, Dalhousie's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences fundraised for a portrait of Elder Paul painted by renowned Mi'kmaq artist Alan Syliboy, which will be hung in the foyer of the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building. The Faculty was able to unveil the portrait to Elder Paul last month, which you can read about here.
Campus flags are being lowered to half mast in his honour.
