The College of Sustainability and the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development at Dalhousie University have come together to launch a new online course, Exploring Sustainability, that will engage you in conversations around agriculture and cities, whales and energy, water and social justice — and so much more.

The course will be offered in a fully online format beginning in January 2022. After completing the course, people can later use it as an academic credit toward their degree if they choose to pursue one at Dalhousie. This course is the first one to be offered as part of a new initiative at the university called DalOpen.

DalOpen focuses on offering non-traditional ways of learning at the university that are accessible, flexible and convenient. In this new age of learning, people are seeking more online, self-paced learning, microcredentials, badges, and more. If you’re interested in learning more about this course, here is a summary of the top 5 things you need to know.

1.     Historians, architects, biologists, archaeologists, and political scientists guide you through complex questions related to food production, Indigenous-settler relations, land use, energy, resource allocation, water, and urbanization. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of diverse approaches to environmental and social problem-solving.

2.     There’s no pre-requisite, which means that if you have an interest in sustainability, you can register today.

3.     Once you’ve finished the course, you’ll have earned an academic credit that you can apply to a degree at Dalhousie (if that’s your choice!)

4.     The course will run from Jan 5 to April 26 and it costs $956.

5.     There will be three short live sessions early in the course, but no mandatory sessions so you can complete the course at your own pace. You’ll learn through engaging videos, online discussions, and a hands-on creative final assignment.
