Tigers weekend recap

There was lots of Tiger sports action during Dalhousie’s Homecoming weekend.

Women’s hockey

The team started the week on Wednesday versus cross-town rivals Saint Mary’s. Despite showering the Huskies net with 46 shots, the black and gold only managed to score three goals to Saint Mary’s four in their first matchup of the regular season.

Looking to get their first win of the season the Tigers hit the ice on Sunday for their home opener against UPEI. Despite an early UPEI lead, Dal was resilient. Assistant captain Jocelyn Leblanc scored two goals and had one assist and Robyn Nicholson scored the game-winning goal on the power play with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. Goaltender Brittany McMacken made 31 saves in her third straight start. The multi-point game makes Leblanc the all-time points leader for Dalhousie’s women’s hockey program. She currently has 70 goals and 56 assists for 126 points in 87 games.

The women’ next game is Saturday, October 29 when they host StFX at 3 p.m.

Men’s hockey

A weekend road trip saw the Tigers face two familiar foes as they took on STU and UdeM for the second time in as many weeks. Benjamin Breault scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the STU Tommies. Rookie goaltender Wendell Vye started the game against Moncton, making 37 saves in a 5-1 loss. Breault scored the lone goal for his fifth point and fourth goal in four games.

Dal hits the road again this upcoming weekend to take on UPEI and last year’s CIS champions, UNB.

Women’s basketball

The team travelled to Ontario to participate in the annual Tindall Tournament hosted by Queen’s. Competing against some of the best teams in the country, the black and gold held their own, defeating Guelph 72-68 and losing close games to UQAM and Queen’s. Keisha Brown was named to the tournament all-star team.

On Wednesday, November 9 the Tigers will host Acadia in their home opener at 6 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Continuing their pre-season play, the taemhosted the Brock Badgers last Friday night. Dal carried a 51-46 lead into the fourth quarter until the Badgers scored 32 points in the final stretch of the game to steal a 78-62 win. Robert Nortmann scored 17 points and posted eight rebounds.

Next up, the team travels to Ontario for games against Ryerson, UofT, and McMaster.

Women’s soccer

Having already clinched a playoff berth the women’s team battled SMU, aiming to catch first place UPEI in the standings. Two cautious halves resulted in a 0-0 tie. Taryn McKenna made two saves in the shutout. On Sunday the black and gold peppered MUN with 11 shots, scoring two goals in the second half for a 2-0 win. Joanna Blodgett and Rieka Santilli scored for the Tigers.

Men’s soccer

The team hosted their first Tigers Battle Prostate Cancer event on Friday with the help of the men’s volleyball team. A total of $529 was raised from ticket sales, shirt sales, and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds were donated to Prostate Cancer Canada. Dal made it a night to remember with a 1-0 win over Saint Mary’s, with Philip Parsons scoring the game-winner. Memorial also fell to the Tigers on Sunday as Julian Perrotta scored two goals to put the game away 2-1.

The soccer teams play Wednesday, October 26 at Saint Mary’s.

Swimming

This weekend UNB hosted the first AUS swim meet of the season. Dalhousie qualified six men for the CIS championships in February and the women and men won all relay events. Kate Webster and Bryan Fumerton dominated the weekend, winning four and five races respectively.
