Winning weekend

- November 22, 2010

On the road and at home Tigers teams came out strong this past weekend to earn key points and move forward in the standings.

Men's hockey

The men’s hockey Tigers had a very successful four-point weekend, defeating Acadia 4-3 in overtime on Friday night and then besting the CIS defending national champion Huskies 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.

Brad McConnell scored the overtime goal for the Tigers on Friday, earning him AUS Subway Player of the Game honours. On Saturday versus the Huskies, Nicholas Croft scored the winning goal with only a few minutes remaining in the fourth period. The Huskies outshot the Tigers 37-22, but goaltender Bobby Nadeau was outstanding and kept his team alive. The men’s hockey team is now tied for fifth place with Acadia with 12 points. Both St. FX and Saint Mary’s are tied for third with 13 points each, barely ahead of the Tigers.

This weekend, the men’s hockey team will host UPEI on Friday at 7:30 p.m. followed by UNB on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The teams round out the first semester with a trip to Antigonish to face the X-Men on November 30.

Women’s volleyball will not play again until after the holiday break on January 15 at UNB.

Men's basketball

On Saturday, the men’s basketball team bested St. FX 59-56 in a huge win at Oland Centre, where the X-Men had won 18 of their last 20 games. Joseph Schow and Sandy Veit led the team with 14 and 13 points respectively. The Tigers currently sit in second place in the AUS standings, four points ahead of UNB and six points behind Cape Breton.

Tuesday night the Tigers basketball teams will take on the Huskies in double-header action at Saint Mary’s and on Friday night they will face UNB in Fredericton.
