The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada, was recognized with an honourary degree at a special law convocation on Friday, Oct. 22.

Dalhousie has honoured Canada's highest judicial officer, a distinguished jurist who leads Canada's Supreme Court of Canada, The Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin.

A special law convocation was held to confer an honourary degree on the Chief Justice in recognition of pragmatic, impartial and far-reaching judgements that have championed the role of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Chief Justice McLachlin is the seventeenth Chief Justice of Canada and first woman to lead the Supreme Court of Canada since its creation in 1875. She serves as Chair of the Canadian Judicial Council, the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada and the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute and is a member of the Privy Council of Canada.

The citation notes that Chief Justice McLachlin has demonstrated "... an uncanny ability to pursue justice with empathy and dignity for all Canadians."
