Faculty of Science-managed scholarships and awards

The following scholarships, funded by endowments, are adjudicated by the Faculty of Science Graduate Scholarship and Awards Committee (GSAC):

Description: The Mary Margaret Werner Graduate Scholarship, established in 2023, provides recognition to graduate students in the Faculty of Science that demonstrates high academic achievement.

Mary (MacNutt) Werner (BSc’57, MSc’60) of Malpeque, P.E.I. began her studies at Dalhousie in the early 1950s. After receiving funding through the Royal Edward Chapter of IODE Canada (a national women’s charitable organization), Mary began her post-graduate studies in botany at Oxford University. Unfortunately, she was forced to abandon the pursuit of her doctorate when her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and returned home to assist her father in running the family farm.

A few years later, she was able to return to her passion: science. After working as a senior laboratory demonstrator at Dalhousie, Mary secured employment as a technician in 1964 with the Atomic Energy of Canada’s Chalk River Laboratory near Deep River, Ontario. There, she met and soon married a solid-state science technician named Douglas Werner. Born in Sault Ste Marie and educated at the former Ryerson Institute of Technology (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in Toronto, Douglas was keen to share a life with someone who shared his love of science and the outdoors.

Description: The Michael Albert Garron Graduate Scholarship, established in 2024, provides recognition to graduate students in a Masters degree program in the Faculty of Science that demonstrates strong achievements and leadership both within and outside of their academic studies.

The fund, established by parents Myron and Berna and brothers Anthony and Mark, is in memory of their beloved son and brother Michael, who had a fascination with the ocean and marine life and dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. Tragically, Michael passed away from cancer at the age of 13. Michael's legacy lives on through the incredible generosity of the Garron Family, who have made considerable philanthropic commitments to hospitals and research institutions across Canada.
