Director of Finance - Ken Moors

Ken Moors joined the Faculty of Health as Financial Manager in August 2010.  Ken is a graduate of Dalhousie University, earning his Bachelor of Commerce in 1977 and his Masters of Public Administration (MPA) in 1992.  He also holds a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.

Ken has held a series of financial positions with the Federal and Provincial Governments, including positions in the Nova Scotia departments of Health, Finance and Education.

Financial Assistant - Kim Briggins

Kim's responsibilities include data entry and reconciliation of payroll information for all units within the faculty; liaising with our unit administrators and financial services on issues relating to payroll; reconciling non-salary expenditures for the Dean's Office; providing support for research establishment and research seed grants; and maintaining an expenditure tracking system.  Kim works closely with the Director of Finance on a variety of budget and financial matters.

Communications, Development & Alumni Engagement

Manager - Communications and Marketing (Interim) - Dawn Morrison

Dawn Morrison has joined the Dal Health team as the Manager of Communications and Marketing for a one year term. Some of you might remember Dawn from her work in various communications roles at Dal since 2004; mainly within the central Communications & Marketing office.

Dawn will be filling in for Laura Hynes Jenkins who has been on parental leave since October 21st. Dawn brings with her considerable experience in university communications. In addition to her work at Dalhousie, she has undertaken contract work though her company Too Many Words Consulting for St. Mary’s University, St. Francis Xavier, Mount Allison University, the University of King’s College and Cape Breton University. She has also completed a six-month contract with the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) over the last year.

A journalist by training, Dawn has been the editor of Dal News and has been published frequently in Dal Magazine.

Development Officer, Health Faculties - Victoria Hamilton

Victoria joined Dalhousie University in June of 2013 as Development Officer for the Health Faculties.  In her new role, Victoria will work with the Faculty of Health Professions on its strategic major gifts, fundraising and stewardship plans.

Victoria obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Mary’s University, specializing in marketing.  She was most recently an Account Development Representative for the Atlantic Region with Hallmark Canada, and previously worked at the TESL Centre at Saint Mary’s University.

Alumni and Donor Relations Officer - Kathy MacFarlane

Kathy MacFarlane joined the Faculty of Health in September 2017 as Alumni and Donor Relations Officer.  She will be working with the Faculty to develop, deliver and evaluate annual alumni and donor relations plans and programs that will engage alumni, students, donors and friends in creating and fostering a culture of support for their Faculty and Dalhousie.

Kathy holds a BPE from UNB and worked in the non-profit sport sector and in operations for many years.  She also worked in alumni relations with both UNB and Saint Mary's University, planning and coordinating alumni events and initiatives.

Director of Operations - Cathie Smith-Gillis

The Director of Operations is a critical, pivotal leadership position within the Faculty of Health.  The Director will provide exemplary leadership and performance accountability to the Office of the Dean through the alignment and execution of the Faculty of Health strategic goals and objectives. The Director is responsible for working collaboratively with the Dean in managing operations, administration, human resources, communications, marketing and alumni relations. This position is responsible for informing the Dean on all key initiatives within the Faculty and for providing informational progress and communication loops to the Dean to achieve those initiatives.  The position will develop and maintain effective working relationships with all faculty and staff in the Faculty of Health and University departments at large.  The University’s and Faculty’s core values will be embedded in all interactions.  The Director will oversee the work of staff, anticipate and resolve problems and contribute to the decision-making process as a leader of the executive management team.  The position is responsible for the development, implementation, and execution of operational policies, procedures, and systems.   Key areas of responsibilities include:

Organizational Infrastructure
Ensures that management and operational policies and procedures are in place to ensure the operational activities are in line with approved budgetary allocations, and meet all legal, ethical, Human Right and Employment standards requirements.  Establish and implement internal controls, administrative and IT systems to ensure the Faculty’s day-to-day operational activities are effective and efficient and in line with approved strategic initiatives and budgetary allocations.  Promotes and ensures a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Organizational Resilience
Upholds the values and principles of the University. Works with the Dean and Deans’ Executive to proactively eliminate risk to the Faculty. Engages with legal services (general counsel and academic) as necessary.  Ensures appropriate levels have administrative, financial and IT systems, infrastructure, policies and procedures are developed to support the implementation and evaluation of the Faculty’s organizational strategies.

Maintains professional conduct, confidentiality and ethical standards.  Leads the planning and execution of activities in the areas of administration and collaborates on finance. Ensures that administration and IT initiatives are evaluated and in line with financial accountability and that recommendations are developed and implemented to increase the Faculty’s impact.  Provide proactive, transparent and in-depth analysis to enhance the Faculty’s leadership and operations.

The Director of Operations reports directly to the Dean.  The Director has managerial and supervisory oversight of human resources, payroll, communications, marketing and alumni, administrative management of general office resources, internet technology, and academic programming proposals.  Reporting directly to the Director of Operations are: Manager of Human Resources and Academic Proposals; Administrative Manager (general office) and Manager of Communications, Marketing and Alumni.

In addition, The Director provides instructional leadership to Schools/College/Institute and C3LR Administrative Managers, Managing Directors, Directors/Assistant Deans and others around operational and human resources.  The Director informs the Dean on the operational performance of Faculty of Health Units as required.

Administrative Manager - Beth Weir (On Secondment)

Beth began her employment with Dalhousie University in 1989 at the Physical Plant and Planning (now called Facilities Management) and in June 1993 joined the Dean's Office as office manager.  Beth provides leadership, guidance and advice to many of the Faculty committees, such as tenure and promotion, director searches/reappointments, Faculty student appeals, etc., and in that role provides interpretation regarding Faculty policies and procedures and the DFA collective agreement and adherence to those polices/collective agreement.  She also oversees the process for clinical placement agreements within the Faculty of Health and writes procedure or policy documents related to processes for the review of clinical placement agreements and certificate of insurance requests.   Beth oversees and manages the Dean's Office facilities projects and, as well, is responsible for the daily supervision of Dean's Office staff.

Assistant to the Dean - Cheryl Brown

Cheryl joined the Dean's Office staff in November 2014 and has an extensive background over several levels of administrative support and management in both profit and non-profit business environments.  Cheryl is responsible for managing the day-to-day business of the Dean.  This includes coordinating the Dean’s schedule and meetings, providing her with administrative support as needed, and liaising with various internal and external stakeholders.    In addition to her duties for the Dean, Cheryl acts as event planner for the Dean’s Office for recurring and special events, including conferences, special lectures, holiday events and more.

Program Assistant, PhD in Health - Niki Power

Niki joined the Dean’s Office team in January, 2015 and provides administrative support to the Program Coordinator, faculty supervisors, sessional lecturers and visiting speakers associated with the PhD in Health program. Her responsibilities also include acting as a resource person to potential applicants and enrolled students as well as marketing and promotional activities and event planning. In addition to program related responsibilities, Niki is also the Academic Integrity Coordinator and the UNIWeb Local Administrator for the Faculty of Health.

Receptionist - Naina Ummat

Naina joined the Dean's Office team in May 2017 as receptionist. Her responsibilities include answering inquires, booking rooms, maintaining filing systems and other administrative duties. Naina also manages the calendar for the Acting Associate Dean (Academic), Dr. Erna Snelgrove-Clarke.

Naina is passionate about the environment and has previously worked for the Newfoundland Government and the Office of Sustainability at Dalhousie University.
