Celebrating excellence: The 2026 Alumni Award recipients

The 2026 Alumni Award recipients exemplify the many ways Dalhousie University alumni and friends of the Faculty of Dentistry have advanced oral health, education, leadership, service, and community wellbeing. Together, their stories reflect a shared commitment to improving lives through professional excellence, innovation, mentorship, and compassionate service.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARDS

This award is presented to alumni who have made special and/or distinctive contributions to their community, profession, society at large, or the Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr. David Dignan (DDS ’86) devoted more than four decades to strengthening both the dental profession and his community. Through leadership roles with the Nova Scotia Dental Association, the Provincial Dental Board, and national dental organizations, he helped to advance the profession while supporting high standards of patient care. His commitment to volunteering in his community transformed his hometown through projects such as Westville Acadia Park, a playground, and a splash park. As an active member of Rotary International, Kinsmen, and other community organizations, Dr. Dignan exemplifies service above self. His leadership, generosity, and dedication to giving back have created a legacy for his profession and community.

Dr. Gorman Doyle (DDS ’80) has dedicated more than 45 years of service to the profession as an educator, mentor, researcher, and leader. Following specialty training in prosthodontics, he returned to Dalhousie and became a driving force in curriculum development and clinical education. He also played a key role in establishing the Faculty’s implant dentistry program. Recognized with numerous teaching awards, Dr. Doyle is widely respected for his dedication to mentorship. Through contributions to research, professional organizations, and national examination standards, Dr. Doyle has had a significant influence on dental education and practice across Canada.

Dr. Jeff Williams (DDS ’86) has demonstrated resilience, leadership, and dedication to the profession throughout his career. When his successful clinical practice was ended by a hand injury, he earned an MBA and redirected his expertise towards business consulting, practice appraisal and brokerage, and governance. Currently the chair of both CDSPI and the Canadian Dentists’ Insurance Company, Dr. Williams has helped to guide programs that support the financial security and wellbeing of dentists across Canada. As a respected speaker, mentor, and advisor, he shares his knowledge generously with colleagues and emerging professionals. His commitment to volunteer leadership and community service reflects his dedication to helping others succeed.

Melinda Ferguson-Robertson (DDH ’88) has dedicated her career to advancing the dental hygiene profession through publishing, education, mentorship, social media engagement, and professional development. As founder of Professional Hygiene Development Services and publisher of Dental Auxiliary Magazine, she expanded access to continuing education and evidence-based knowledge for dental professionals across Canada. By connecting clinicians, educators, industry partners, and learners, she fostered communities of practice that encouraged knowledge sharing, lifelong learning, and professional growth. A respected speaker, mentor, and advocate, she championed innovation in professional education and volunteer outreach. Her leadership has inspired colleagues, students, and practitioners and left a lasting impact on the profession.

Dr. Sangeeta Wylie (DDS ’01) has built an extraordinary career that bridges dentistry, education, regulation, community service, and the arts. As an educator and mentor, she has helped to guide future oral health professionals while contributing to ethical and professional standards through regulatory leadership. Beyond dentistry, she is an award-winning playwright, actor, and social justice advocate who uses storytelling to foster dialogue, cultural understanding, and inclusion. Her volunteer efforts and outreach activities have supported underserved communities and promoted equitable access to care. By combining professional expertise with creative expression and public service, Dr. Wylie demonstrates how leadership can extend across disciplines to create meaningful societal change.

EARLY CAREER ALUMNI AWARD
This award is presented to an alumnus within 10 years of receiving a degree whose excellent accomplishments and leadership – in either their professional career or through community service – provide inspiration to students and other early career alumni.

Dr. Mo Salam (DDS ’24) represents the next generation of Dalhousie leaders and has already distinguished himself through exceptional achievement in education, research, leadership, and service. While completing his DDS, he simultaneously earned a Master of Education, served as class president, conducted nationally recognized research, and received numerous awards for academic excellence and leadership. Since graduation, he has quickly become a valued faculty member known for his dedication to teaching and mentorship. Through volunteer dentistry, outreach initiatives, and research focused on improving oral health outcomes, he is helping to address health inequities while inspiring students and colleagues. His accomplishments reflect great promise and early-career impact.

FRIEND OF DAL DENTISTRY AWARDS
This award is presented to an individual, company, organization, group, or foundation that has had a positive and substantial impact on the Faculty of Dentistry through volunteerism, promotion, support, financial assistance, collaboration, and/or participation. 

David Murchison has spent more than 15 years building meaningful partnerships between industry and the Faculty of Dentistry. Through his work with Nobel Biocare, he has supported implant education, continuing professional education, clinical training, and patient care opportunities that benefit students, residents, faculty, and practitioners. He has played a key role in securing significant in-kind contributions that enhance learning experiences and expanded access to advanced implant technologies. Widely respected for his professionalism, generosity, and collaborative spirit, Murchison has helped to build connections between industry and academia and support innovation in oral health education. His contributions have left a lasting mark on both the Faculty of Dentistry and the broader dental community.

GreenShield has made an extraordinary impact on oral health care access for underserved communities while expanding educational opportunities for future oral health professionals. Through its remarkable generosity and partnership, thousands of patients have received treatment through the Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry’s outreach clinics and community-based programs. Their commitment has also enhanced clinical facilities, advanced oral health education initiatives, and expanded services that help patients overcome barriers to care. By advancing health equity and creating meaningful learning experiences for dental and dental hygiene students, GreenShield Cares has transformed access to care while helping to prepare the next generation of oral health providers.

The awards will be presented during 2026 DentDays on Thursday, October 15. The ceremony will take place in the Dentistry Building, Level 2, 6:00-7:30 pm. We ask that you please register to help us with our planning.
