It was an evening to mark the achievements of students and recognize the generosity of donors. Both were celebrated at the annual Academic Awards ceremony, held on November 7 in the Dentistry Building. Over 60 awards were presented to both dentistry and dental hygiene students across all years of their respective programs.
"To all the students here this evening, I would like to say how proud we are of your achievements," said Dr. Ben Davis, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, in his opening remarks. "Not only do you work hard in your labs, classes, and clinics, but you also find time to take on leadership roles and volunteer and contribute to the community."
"To all our donors and supporters," he added, "we are tremendously grateful to you for making these awards possible. It means a lot to our students and it means a lot to us as a dental school."
Associate dean of students, Dr. Ferne Kraglund, explained that the awards can be bestowed for overall academic achievements, proficiency in a particular subject, or an exceptional level of professionalism or patient care. They can also be awarded for community involvement, leadership, or volunteering.
"These are all important aspects of being an oral health care professional," she said. "It is our great pleasure to be able to recognize our students for their achievements and to show them that their commitment and hard work matter."
Several new awards were added this year, making it possible to recognize more students. Three donors (or their representatives) attended the ceremony and presented their awards: Dr. Cynthia Andrews, representing the family of Dr. Noel Andrews, Dr. Rick Raftus, representing the family of Dr. Eric Hatfield, and Marc and Nickolas Thoms, the husband and son of Dr. Maureen Lawton.
Two students, Derek D’Eon (DDS3) and Veronique Nguyen (DDH2), spoke of what the awards mean to them and offered their thanks to donors.
"To a lot of us students, winning these awards reflects the passion we have for oral health,” said Veronique. “It reminds us that we are moving in the right direction and encourages us to continue our professional endeavours."
Derek added his thanks to the professors, donor, and upper-class students who have helped along the way, ending with a tribute to current classmates. "…together we have formed a tight-knit community of learners, supporters, and friends. We’ve faced the challenges of rigorous coursework, early mornings, and late nights together. Our collective efforts have created an environment that fosters growth and resilience."
