DentDays 2023: Shaking up how we gather and celebrate

Posted by Kathy MacFarlane on April 25, 2023 in News

The Dentistry Alumni Committee (DAC) has traditionally hosted Homecoming weekends in September with reunions, CE Days, a gala dinner, and Outstanding Alumni Awards events.

But COVID-19 and post-tropical storm Fiona have played havoc with scheduling over the past few years and most Homecoming activities were cancelled in 2022. The DAC took the opportunity to ask a few alumni for their ideas and re-envision what our alumni weekend could look like.

What we heard is that alumni want time to connect independently with their classmates and to gather with the larger alumni and dental community in a casual environment. Continuing education sessions are also important. It was clear that large formal and expensive gatherings are not as popular as they once were.

"We are excited to shake things up and invite all our alumni, friends, and community to be part of DentDays with us," says Denise Zwicker (BDH’12, DDH’04), chair of the DAC, and co-chair of DentDays 2023. "After the last few years, we can’t wait to see you all in person."

On Friday, October 27, reunion groups are invited to come to campus for a clinic tour, receive their reunion pins, and other class activities. The Faculty will also help to plan private class dinners at restaurants in Halifax (contact alumni.dentistry@dal.ca).

On Saturday, October 28, CE Day for the dental community will take place at the Dentistry Building, featuring some great speakers and topics. Outstanding Alumni Awards (OAAs) will be presented to remarkable alumni at a reception in the early evening. This event is open to all and will take place in the Student Union Building.

Afterwards, we will wrap up the weekend with a private Dal Dentistry kitchen party in the Grawood pub, conveniently located one floor below the OAA ceremony.  It will be a casual, fun evening, featuring live Maritime music and maybe even the cries of "sociable".

Start making your plans

"Halifax is beautiful in the fall, and the term is well under way in October, so it’s the perfect time to come together. We invite everyone to start making plans and to watch for more details coming soon," says DentDays 2023 co-chair Lindsay Macdonald (DDH’15).

See you in October!

The DAC comprises dentistry and dental hygiene volunteer alumni, who work to promote and encourage the active participation of alumni in the activities of the Faculty of Dentistry and its future direction, to enhance connections between and among alumni and students, support the advancement of dental education and research, and promote Dalhousie Alumni Association initiatives.
