The new-look Fillings Café

The Dentistry Building’s Fillings Café re-opened last week with a new name, a new look, and new menu options. Following a facelift over the summer, it is already proving a popular coffee and lunch venue. One happy customer says that it reminds him of a café in Prague.

Now known as Fillings Bistro 32, the café was renamed to reflect the number of teeth an adult has, assuming (as someone in the know pointed out) that wisdom teeth are part of the count. In addition to the name change, the café was updated with a new brick-look backdrop, new signage, and new display cases for the food to create a more modern, open, and inviting appearance.

Dal Food Services consulted with the Faculty of Dentistry's Health and Wellness committee in the spring, giving members an opportunity to taste coffees, sample some food options, and provide feedback.

Sandwiches, baked goods, soups, and other items are delivered fresh each morning and are attractively displayed in glass-fronted cases. Food is locally sourced as much as possible, with plenty of international, vegetarian/vegan, and gluten-free options. The emphasis is on fresh and healthy, with plenty of choice. “We really wanted to get innovative with flavour and broaden our range of ethnic and healthy options,” says Dalhousie Food Services marketing manager Carla Nicholson.

Plastic-free and environmentally friendly

As part of a cross-campus environmental initiative, food (apart from to-go options) is no longer wrapped in plastic, which reduces waste and lets customers see what they are buying. You can expect to see the menu change frequently, with daily wrap and soup specials, lots of tasty baked goods, and a choice of Fair Trade organic coffees and other beverages. Watch out for Brew 32, a new coffee that will soon be available, and feel free to taste the different samples that are on display.

Remember that you can pay with your DalCard (you have to load it with money first! and that Linda, Laura, and Carol – the friendly faces behind the counter – are always happy to take your suggestions for specials and menu items.

Fillings Bistro 32 is open Monday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
