The Faculty of Computer Science organized the 3rd annual DPC/H
-- Dalhousie Programming Contest for High School and Junior High students (http://dalcontest.ca).  

The contest consists of two phases.  In the first phase, some practice
problems are posted on-line and the students submit solutions
electronically. The solutions are judged, and the results sent to the
participants.  Sample solutions for the posted
problems are also distributed at the end of the on-line phase.  While this first phase is only a practice and educational phase, the actual competition was held at
Dalhousie in the second or on-site phase.  

This year, 18 students registered in the on-line phase, from 9 schools: Auburn, Sir John A., C.P. Allen, Prince Andrew, Halifax West, Bedford South, Kennebecasis Valley,
Citadel and Cobequid Educational Centre.

The on-site competition was held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 in the Goldberg Computer Science Building.

The top ranked contestants were:

    6 problems, cumulative time: 11:14:55
    First Prize: Laptop Computer, Toshiba 15.6"

2. Sam Doiron
    Grade 11, Charles P. Allen High School
    4 problems, cumulative time: 3:56:14
    Second Prize: Tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, 10.1", 16GB Android

3. Matthew Kallada
    Grade 12, Sir John A. MacDonald High School
    4 problems, cumulative time: 4:01:10
    Third Prize; Tablet, iPad Mini WiFi 16 GB

4. Ali Hussain
    Grade 12, Charles P. Allen High School
    3 problems, cumulative time: 1:31:55

5. Peter Lee
    Grade 11, Charles P. Allen High School
    3 problems, cumulative time: 3:48:38

6. Jacob Simmons
    Grade 12, Halifax West High School
    3 problems, cumulative time: 3:54:49

7. Nick Graham
    Grade 12, Prince Andrew High School
    3 problems, cumulative time: 7:56:41

While this is not a school competition, FCS would like to recognize the very strong group results of the students from the Charles P. Allen High School.  Congratulations to them and their Computer Science teacher and programming coach Mr. Paul Geddes.
