Ergonomic Program Design and Integration (100% Online)
This course guides participants through the process of designing an ergonomics program. We will examine strategies designed to increase participation from employees, supervisors, union, management, etc. in best-practice ergonomics to reduce the frequency and severity of workplace injury. Participants will learn strategies for integrating ergonomics into their work systems (i.e. occupational health and safety, purchasing, human resources, etc.) in addition to exploring and understanding the use of cost-benefit strategies to successfully justify investments in ergonomics interventions. Finally, we will discuss proven mechanisms to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of these efforts.

Receiving course credit
Each week students will complete reading assignments and review a case study. Students will be required to answer questions related to the case study that will form part of their overall grade for the course. The final assignment for the course, which contributes to 40% of the grade, is given at the conclusion of the fourth week. It will require participants to use the tools and information that are discussed and used during the course to conduct a hazard assessment at their place of work. To achieve credit for the course students must achieve an overall score of at least 60%.

- Become familiar with various sources used to help justify the need for an ergonomics program in the workplace.
- Develop strategies for establishing an infrastructure from which an ergonomics program will function.
- Examine barriers to program implementation and help develop strategies to overcome those barriers.
- Examine strategies for involving management, union, supervisors and employees in a program.
- Become familiar with the cost justification process and how it can be used to facilitate the implementation of ergonomics interventions.
- Learn how to facilitate the interpretation and communication of cost benefit data to appropriate decision makers.
- Examine methods for ensuring the long term success of an ergonomics initiative.

David has over eighteen years of experience helping corporations and government departments improve their performance. He has done this by helping companies identify design issues that lead to poor performance and injury while working with them to develop and implement practical and effective solutions that improve the design, set-up and organization of work systems, spaces, equipment, and tasks. David has a Master of Science degree with specialization in Ergonomics, is a member of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE), and is a Board Certified Professional Ergonomist as awarded by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE).
