Sabrina Hoque

PhD Candidate

Sabrina H 2016

Sabrina Hoque is a doctoral candidate in Political Science at Dalhousie University, working under the supervision of Dr. Brian Bow. Her current research examines the effects of international aid expenditures on the governance conditions of developing countries. With a specific focus on the United Nations Development Programme, Sabrina’s dissertation presents a unique, comprehensive dataset comprised of governance and annual UNDP expenditure data (amongst other control variables) for over 170 countries spread across 5 regions covering a period of nine years (2004-2012).

Sabrina’s interest in governance challenges in developing countries and the relationships subsequently formed with international aid organizations started at a young age. Her interest in foreign policy, international relations and international development grew stronger as she lived in three continents and is an avid traveler. Sabrina returned to Canada to obtain her BA (Hon.) in Public Policy and Political Science from the University of Toronto in 2004, after which she completed an MSc in International Relations (with a focus on international law) from Royal Holloway, University of London (UK) in 2005.

As a CFPS doctoral fellow, Sabrina has co-organized several major round-table discussions, conferences, and workshops including:

  • “Debating the Prospects for a ‘Post-American World,’" - A round-table follow-up discussion on associated book's debate at the 2011 International Studies Association Annual Convention in Montreal; panelists were: Joseph Nye, William Wohlforth, Mark Brawley, Timothy Shaw, Ronald Tammen, and William Thompson
  • “ICC, Peacebuilding and Security,” - A workshop at Dalhousie University in 2010
  • “Is There Life Abroad After Afghanistan? The future of Canadian Expeditionary Operations,” - Annual Conference of the Security and Defence Forum, CFPS, Dalhousie University in 2010.
  • “Geopolitics vs. Global Governance: Reinterpreting International Security,” DND-funded Fourth Annual Graduate Symposium held at Dalhousie University in 2009.

Throughout her doctoral studies, Sabrina remained actively involved with numerous extracurricular activities. She worked with the Canadian Red Cross’ Humanitarian Issues Program as Lead Facilitator for a youth advocacy group (“Even Wars Have Limits”), served as Deputy Director for the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies, and volunteered with the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, and Canadian International Council.

Sabrina has been working with the United Nations Development Programme since 2012 (following the successful completion of a 6-month internship with the Bureau for Development Policy), and most recently completed a consultancy with UNDP's Global Anti-Corruption Initiative (GAIN).

Sabrina currently lives in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with her husband, Dr. Sean Clark (fellow Dal Poli Sci-er), and is working as a Policy Analyst with the Government of Nunavut.
