Ag Campus Community Open House Thursday, July 25

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on May 28, 2013 in Events

Our campus Open House is scheduled for late July and the theme this year is Summer Traditions. After all, our Community Open House has been a community tradition for more than 20 years. We’re as much a tradition as playing hide-and-seek until dark or setting up the ol’ lemonade stand.

The event is now being managed by Sarah Morris.

Open House will have some improvements this year, based on some helpful feedback we’ve received.

·         A new, dynamic microsite at dal.ca/agopenhouse will have frequently changing content that highlights the many aspects of our event. We are just getting that site built now and ready for launch shortly.

·         We are inviting a couple of community groups to join in the fun with their own additions to Open House. For instance, the Truro Farm Market is staging a mini farm market onsite that day.

·         A fruit cart with beverages will be added down by RAC to provide some much-needed refreshments and healthy snacks to visitors and campus folks alike.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate so there will be online participation forms that are easy for you to fill out and submit. We will be planning earlier for signage and volunteer t-shirts. We’re event adding some awards to recognize those who go the extra mile to make their Open House exhibits and activities truly special.

We want to show our community, once again, what a gem they have in us. To that end,

o   We will have a more aggressive promotion schedule to make sure Community Open House is on everyone’s to-do list.

o   We will be promoting individual activities and exhibits in advance so would-be visitors can plan their time with us.

o   We will also be extending the reach of the event beyond just families with small children. We want to make sure everyone in our community can see and feel our relevance and how agriculture affects their lives.

If you would like to be involved, the Community Open House committee can always use some new energetic members. The committee will meet three times (barring any unforeseen issues):

  • Thursday, May 30 10:30-11:30  Alumni Hall
  • End of June July 18,
  • one week before event

Whether you sit on the committee or lend your energy and enthusiasm to an exhibit or activity for the Community Open House, please plan to be a part of this important outreach event. There is no better summer tradition that helps people understand how important our work in agriculture is to our community’s health and future.
