Dalhousie named one of Canada's Best Employers for New Canadians

Dalhousie is proud to be named one of Canada’s Best Employers for New Canadians for 2013, as appears in today’s Globe & Mail.

This designation recognizes employers offer interesting programs to assist New Canadians in making a transition to a new workplace – and a new life in Canada. (Canada’s Top 100 Family Friendly Employers). David Adeyemi, Facilities Management, knows all about that experience.

David began working at Dal as a custodian after his wife saw an advertisement for the Facilities Management Job Fair. She was living in Halifax with her family at the time, while he was still living in the Lagos state of Nigeria. It took five years before David could join his wife in Canada.

“When I arrived in Halifax in fall 2011 the timing was perfect because I was able to attend the university’s job fair,” says David. “I was hired soon after and I really see working at Dal as a privilege.”

David adds that Dalhousie is much like a small country not only because of its large size, but that there is so much diversity among faculty, staff and students. His experience working at the university has exposed him to many new things and new people.

He attributes his coworkers to helping him adjust to working at Dal and in a new country. “My colleagues are always willing to lend me a hand, and are so easy to communicate with. They’ve really ignited my passion for the job.”

Since Dalhousie was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers last fall, the university has also received other awards including being one of Canada’s Top Family-Friendly Employers, Best Diversity Employers, Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers and Nova Scotia’s Top Employers.
